Team 839, Rosie Robotics of Agawam High School is proud to announce the winning of the Chairman’s’ Award at the FIRST Boston Regional this past weekend. The Regional Chairman’s Award is FIRST’s most prestigious award, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. The award helps keep the central focus of the FIRST Robotics Competition on the goal of inspiring greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology. The Chairman’s is awarded to the team that accomplishes and exemplifies community outreach and gracious professionalism. We received this award after working many hours with a small group of dedicated students who presented their growth and community impact to a group of judges consisting of college faculty and business leaders. The judges felt these students are the best example of the future. The First organization strives to help provide students with the skills to make the world a better place through science and technology. The presentation to the judges given by Nicole Cameron and Amanda Bessette provided the judges with an exceptionally cheerful angle to the team’s hard work, long hours and dedication to expanding FIRST within Agawam. Our team not only built a robot within the 6 week time frame given to all teams, but we ran a summer camp to provide an opportunity for the Jr High students to get a glimpse their future. Agawam Middle School has recently decided to start 2 FIRST Lego League teams beginning in April. The team would like to thank all of the companies and supporters we have had the benefit of access to their facilities, their checkbooks and their personnel. G & L Tool, Berkshire Power, Hamilton Sundstrand, Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance and Insurance Company, Rosie Boosters, Coe Family Fund, Cassell Financial Services, Agawam Lions Club, Agawam Rotary, Agawam Chamber of Commerce the many parents and relative who have come to our World Famous Ziti dinners and golfers in our Tournament of Rosie. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills. The following is the full text of the presentation speech given by Dr. Woodie Flowers.“The Regional Chairman's Award was created to keep the central focus of the FIRST Robotics Competition on FIRST's ultimate goal of transforming our culture in ways that will inspire greater respect for science and technology, and to encourage more young people to appreciate the real life rewards and career opportunities in those fields. The Regional Chairman's Award honors the team that, in the judges' estimation, best represents a model for other teams to emulate, and which embodies the goals and purpose of FIRST. It is the most prestigious award presented at this regional competition. The winner of this award will be invited to the 2008 FIRST Championship in Atlanta, where it will compete against the winners from the other 40 regionals for the Chairman's Award. Our Boston winner shows infectious enthusiasm that: inspires future career choices in engineering, technology and science AND attracts younger people to FIRST through summer camps and projects that are FUN. Their outreach communications are exceptional and worthy of emulation by FRC teams everywhere. This exceptionally well-organized team has a phenomenal knack for creating partnerships with those who can continue to move FIRST into OVERDRIVE. Long, Long, Long, Long term planning and execution clearly deliver excellence. Hip, Hip, HOORAY! Today's Rosie's Day!
